WiFi for Senior Living Case Study: Eastmont Campus Achieves Reliable WiFi

Eastmont Senior Living, a property owned and operated by Transforming Age, is a 184-unit senior living community located in Lincoln, Nebraska. Comprised of five separate buildings, Eastmont was struggling with outdated internet infrastructure that impacted both residents and staff.

The Challenge

Eastmont’s existing WiFi system was built on legacy equipment, consisting of just four access points installed in hallway locations across the buildings. This resulted in inconsistent coverage and unreliable service throughout the campus. The wiring was outdated and in poor condition. Some cables were shared between voice and data services, unlabeled, disorganized, and riddled with multiple splices.

Network switches were hidden in drop ceilings, feeding various wired Ethernet outlets without clear management. This set-up made it difficult for residents and staff to stay connected as they moved throughout the property.

Dojo’s Approach

Dojo Networks was brought in to deliver a full senior housing WiFi rescue and modernization plan that would provide reliable connectivity while maximizing reuse of any viable equipment to manage costs. After multiple detailed site surveys, our team designed a comprehensive solution that included rewiring every unit and common area with new Cat 6a cabling, carefully limiting cable runs to under 300 feet to ensure optimal network performance.

We implemented a single-mode fiber 10 Gigabit backbone connecting each building to a central network, fed by a robust Multi Gigabit fiber circuit to guarantee high-speed, stable internet service across the entire property.

Solution Highlights

  • In-Unit Access Points: Ruckus H550 wall-mounted APs installed inside each apartment, providing strong WiFi coverage plus four wired Ethernet ports for tenant use.

  • Common Area Coverage: Ruckus R550 ceiling-mounted APs installed throughout shared spaces for consistent, high-quality WiFi.

  • Network Infrastructure: Each building equipped with an Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) connected via single-mode fiber to the Main Distribution Frame (MDF), supporting network scalability and performance.

  • Power Reliability: Managed and Monitored UPS backup power ensures the network stays up and running even during power outages.

  • Project Execution: The entire upgrade was completed on schedule, between July 10 and August 28, 2023, with minimal disruption to residents. Clear communication and careful cleanup were top priorities throughout the process.

The Result

Eastmont Senior Living now offers residents and staff reliable, high-speed internet in every unit and throughout all common areas with the ability to roam throughout the property. Wired ports on each apartment’s access point support even faster connections for those who need them. The network is remotely monitored 24/7 by Dojo’s monitoring systems and alerting backed by call center support to resolve issues quickly and keep users connected.

This project was delivered on time and within budget, providing Eastmont with a future-proof Managed WiFi system designed to support the community’s needs now and for years to come.
